Kering is renowned for its global luxury portfolio from Gucci, Balenciaga, Gucci, Saint Laurent and more. And this year, under the glamor of the Cannes Film Festival, the luxury multinational corporation will honor American actress and producer Viola Davis with their 2022 Women In Motion Award.
We’ve seen Davis Widows, Fences– for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, as well as her riveting performance in The Help, and, lets not forget her complex character in ABCs How To Get Away With Murder. Her characters are bold and strong, they uplift women. And we’ve seen her win a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, four SAG Awards, and an Emmy wearing Stella McCartney, Armani Privé, Michael Kors, and Alexander McQueen to name a few. With all her accomplishments, Davis is the first African American actresses to have so many nominations and awards for her entertainment work.
A champion for racial diversity in film, Davis has also campaigned for gender rights. Standing alongside women politicians and notable women in film, the actress participated in the Women’s March at the beginning of 2018. Born into a poor family in St. Matthews, South Carolina, Davis grew up in Rhode Island but inherited speaking out from her mother, who was a Civil Rights activist.
And this is why François-Henri Pinault, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Kering, Pierre Lescure, President of the Festival de Cannes and Thierry Frémaux, Executive Director of the Festival de Cannes, will give her this award in a few weeks at the Women In Motion dinner on May 22nd.
Kering is committed to women and making a difference for them in the arts and culture. Launching the award in 2015 during the Cannes Film Festival, it was the corporation’s aim to highlight women in film, both in front and behind the camera. “For the past eight years, Women In Motion has been a platform of choice that contributes to changing mind sets and thinking on the place of women – and the recognition they receive – in the arts and culture,” notes Kering.
Davis’ stylist Elizabeth Stewart has dressed the actress in daring yet fitting gowns for the most notable events. So, it will be exciting to see what Davis will be wearing for the dinner.
Last year Salma Hayek was the winner of the award, Gong Li in 2019, Patty Jenkins in 2018, Isabell Hubgert in 2017, Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon in 2016, and Jane Fonda in 2015.
